Health and saftey tips no. 3

To make the mouth of my shoe I need to use air-drying clay and I used scissors to cut up the acetate along with a stapler to hold it together. To make sure I don't accidental hurt me or someone else I have to:
  • Not drop the clay bag as it is heavy
  • Be careful while using the scissors
  • Be careful while using the stapler

14/12/10

Period 1

We were in the computer room and we added new labels to our blogs so that it is easier for the marker to see which piece of work comes under which learning objectives. I also tried to upload the video of us making the big charity monster but unfortunately had to make it from scratch again and didn't have time to complete this within the lesson.

Period 2

We were working on our shoe again and I have made the mouth and began painting it. I have also made the sole along with the support for the heel, unfortunately I forgot the templates I was going to use so I couldn't get them completed but made the mouth instead. The mouth is made from air-drying clay. We also got sweets because it was our last lesson before Christmas!

Period 3

We were back in the computer room and we completed any work that we hadn't completed which involved letters to the charity shops and I also did a bit more work on the stop-motion movie I was doing in period 1. Miss also said my blog was really good!

Overview

We did a lot of finishing work today which was good because we didn't have to do it at home. I have almost managed to get back on schedule in artifact. Just a little bit behind and that's because I had to spend a lot of time trying to find a working stapler.

This is a video of a real robot

This is the video of our performance at Browick, I'm the robot. It shows how the performance came together and how we managed to cope even though we didn't have the full group that we'd been hoping for.

Health and safety tips no. 2

I wanted a bumpy texture on my shoe but doing this was going to present some health and safety hazards. To get the texture of the shoe right I had to heat the acetate. To do this Miss gave me a lighter and an iron. Obviously there are some points I need to consider, these are:

  • Be careful not to burn myself when using the lighter
  • Be careful not to let anything else in the room catch on fire
  • Don't hold the acetate when it's hot
  • Don't touch the hot side of the iron
  • Tell other people not to touch the iron when it's hot
  • Be careful with the iron whilst it's cooling down as it may still be hot

Period 1

First miss told us when all our artifact work had to be hand in by and made sure that we all new what had to be done. Then we all began completing this work. I changed my design again to include acetate instead of wax, acetate is the plastic stuff that goes on overhead projectors. I used small samples to test it, if I heated it it would become bumpy and stay like this. First I tried heating it with a flame but then it curled up as well and I wanted it to keep it's shape. I the used an iron and it still went bumpy but didn't go bumpy so I decided I'd use that technique to make my shoe. Miss then told me that it's very rigid when ironed so I'm going to have make the shape out of acetate first and then use a heat gun to make it bumpy, the iron wouldn't be able to iron the shape of the shoe. I also am going to take apart my old converses and use the bits of them for the template which I'll base my shoe on.

Period 2

We wrote a letter to our charities to tell them how our campaign went and whether or not we received any donations. We then began making a stop motion movie about "the birth of the Charity Monster." This is going well and it includes the big Charity monster being made and use thinking up the idea of the charity monster.

Period 3

We had a cover teacher who strangely didn't turn up. So we just did whatever work we hadn't yet completed or perfected any other work. I made sure the designs for my new shoe were going to work and there wasn't going to be any unexpected surprises when it came to making.

Overview

Today involved lots of quick thinking to solve problems and knowledge of how to work an iron. I think that I could've worked a little bit harder in the lesson where we had no teacher, the rest of the day I worked hard and completed a lot of things.

Dear sir/miss,
I am writing on behalf of the creative and media group that visited you on the 5th of October. You asked us to collect more toys and to do this we launched a campaign and hoped to receive donations. Unfortunately, due to the dates of our campaign and restricted time, we have failed to get any donations to help your charity. We have though raised awareness so hopefully you will receive more donations from, now on.

Kind regards,

Jacob Lucas

Dude! I've turned into a robot!

For the performance we had to do at Browick just done I had to be a robot and this involved making myself a robot costume. I have written up instructions on how it happened just so you can see how much time it took.

Materials

  • cardboard boxes (ones that just go past your waist)
  • silver heating duct (length of both your arms)
  • duck tape
  • silver spray (enough to cover your cardboard boxes)
  • any add-ons you may like (I used silver tins and silver curry boxes)
  • Scissors
  • Helper
  • Silver jump suit

Instructions

  1. using the duck tape go over all the edges of your cardboard boxes (you may have to tape two or more together). This will be the body of your robot.
  2. cut out holes for your arms. (give room to move around and so they don't rub)
  3. using the heating duct cut it down to equal lengths and then squish or stretch to make it fit your arms. Cover the ends of these in duct tape so they don't cut you,
  4. Spray your box silver and once dried, using duct tape, stick on any add-ons you like.
  5. Stick on any other add-ons you like to the jump suit, only below the waist though. Use  plenty of duct tape to do this as they may fall off. This will be the legs.
  6. Use your helper to help get the suit on and strike a pose. Helper should also congratulate you on your achievement

Another bad fail

Whats happening in the land of fail

We were expecting to get some donations from the children but unfortunately we only got one, and that was a freebie from a MacDonald's meal. I think this is because that we were only there for one day and the letter we sent to the school was 2 weeks ago so some children might have forgotten and there has also been a lot of toy sales for children in need and school fete's just before our collection dates. These took most of our donations and parents may be short of money because of Christmas coming up. I think that if we had our collection earlier or had a box where they could leave toys at the primary school for a week instead of them having only one day to bring it on.

What I've learnt from this fail

  • Try to choose collection dates that have had no other big collection dates before it
  • Keep them aware of it, make sure you keep telling them so they can't forget it
  • Allow them to bring in donations in their own time, not only on one day for an hour
  • Instead of asking them to bring toys in go to them

My workshop

We had to do a workshop with the year 3's of Browick Primary School. Because of the snow our group went from 7 to 4. Despite this we managed to adapt and keep the year 3's interested. We involved lots of charity related games which they seemed to enjoy and there was very few moments where they were of task or not enjoying it. We did have to improvise a lot though as they completed things a lot quicker than expected so towards the end it was more difficult but we managed and all played a big and decent role in the workshop.

From our questionnaire we learnt that, after our workshop, most of the children new what the difference between a charity shop and a normal shop. As this wasn't all of them we explained what it was and then they all understood. They all also wanted to donate to charity (I think that a few of them put there hands up as every ones else did but most seemed as if they actually did).

1/12/10

Period 1

We went to Browick Primary to show our performances and do the workshops. These have been explained in more detail in earlier posts, I do however think that they both went as well as they could have gone. The performance went smoothly and the year 3's seemed to enjoy the workshops.

Period 2

We have continued with the making of my shoe and I have almost finished the template of my shoe, unfortunately way behind schedule. I think this is because that I changed my plans at the last minute and didn't think about the fact that I was going to need a template or that it was going to be so difficult to make one that works. To try and get myself back on schedule I'm going to work a lot harder and think if there will be an easier way to do what I'm abouts to do but with the same results.

Period 3

Mrs Brogan (who normally takes us for these lessons) wasn't here today so we had a supply teacher and the work that we were set was to write up about the trip to Browick and how our campaign has been going so far. That was a fairly easy lesson as all we were doing is typing up what happened but still it took a while so I'm glad we did it in that lesson not for homework.

Overview

The day was a complete mixture of what we've been doing so far on the diploma, performing, making and writing our thoughts on how the making and performing went. It was a successful day because that nothing went wrong and I got a lot of stuff done. But will have to work extra hard on my shoe next lesson.
